Homework Policy
Kindergarten, Grade 1: 10-20 minutes daily
Grade 2 & 3: 30 minutes daily
Students will be given spelling homework weekly and math homework daily. They are expected to turn in spelling homework every Friday and math homework the day immediately following the day the math homework was sent home. There is no homework assigned on Fridays. If absent, the student will be given their homework when they return and will have as many days as they were absent to complete their work. No late work will be accepted unless they were absent on the day it was to be turned in.
If it takes your child longer to do their homework than the time aforementioned, please have them do as much as they can, then write me a note with a signature when you have reached the 30 minute mark. Your child will still get full credit for their homework.
With common core curriculum being sent home, homework may seem a bit confusing. I will try to make sure their in-class practice pages are completely correct so you can have a point of reference.

Behavior System
Daily Point Sheet
Each student has a Daily Point Sheet that serves 3 purposes: 1. Serves as a daily communication between parents and school staff on the student’s behavior, progress, and any concerns. 2. Provides students with immediate feedback and reinforcement for their behavior choices and promotes positive skill attainment and use 3. Provides a clear measure of a student’s behavior and responses to interventions used in the class. All comments from school staff regarding a student’s behavior provide a positive replacement behavior choice for the student to focus on skill building and use rather than an account of negative behaviors displayed.
Students earn a point for displaying positive behavior in 10 areas of functioning for each period of the day. If students engage in the desired behavior within 2 or fewer reminders by staff, they earn their point for that period of the day. If it takes 3 or more prompts, the point is not earned in that area. This system encourages students to use a coping skill or gain assistance to work through difficulties that arise to continue to earn points, rather than promote that difficulties do not occur. Students have the opportunity to earn 100 points each day. Points are never taken away; they are simply earned or not earned. This provides a system of reinforcement that is designed to give students natural and logical consequences for their behavior choices which leads to “owning” their successes and taking responsibility for their choices.
Level System
There are 4 classroom levels that a student may earn based on their behavior and points earned daily. At the end of each day, students earn a spot in the class level system based on the total points earned that day:
100-90: Hang Ten Level
89-80: Surfing Level
79 points or less: Paddling Level
Wipe Out Level is not based on points earned, but is a level a student earns if they engage in unsafe behavior including: harm to others, property destruction, and leaving area without permission.
All privileges in the class setting are earned based on a student’s level. This includes activities during free/activity time, access to the classroom store, Fun Friday, and attendance on field trips. Students remain on the point and level system throughout the day (in group therapy, speech therapy, recess, lunch, individual therapy, attendance in general education setting, etc.)
A student on the Hang Ten level displays "role model" appropriate behavior choices throughout the day, manages any difficulties with the use of coping skills or with the assistance of staff immediately, and is completing work consistently. A student earning the Surfing Level is making positive choices for the most part and completing most work. The Paddling Level typically indicates that a student is not engaged in academic work for a significant portion of the day or has had ongoing behavioral difficulties throughout the day. A student on Wipe Out Level has engaged in unsafe behavior and requires additional monitoring and support.
